What is a DUI?
DUI stands for “driving under the influence.” In Wisconsin, a DUI is commonly known as an OWI, which means “operating while intoxicated.” A DUI/OWI is a serious offense that can have serious penalties, such as significant fines, jail time, or even the revocation of your driver’s license.
According to Wisconsin law, a person who is at least 21 years old can get arrested for an OWI with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher; while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs; or with any detectable amount of an illegal or restricted drug in his/her blood. The BAC limit for a DUI is 0.02 percent for underage drivers (individuals under 21 years of age) and 0.04 percent for commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders.
