Canku Teca
The Yankton Sioux Tribe, known as Ihanktonwan Dakota, is a sovereign Native nation rooted in the lands along the Missouri River in what is now southeastern South Dakota. Our homeland is called Canku Teca, meaning The Great Road, a name that reflects our history as people of movement, connection, and purpose.
Guided by the values of the Dakota people—respect, generosity, courage, and wisdom—the Yankton Sioux Tribe remains committed to preserving our language, culture, and traditions while strengthening our future for generations to come. Our governance honors our inherent sovereignty and works to promote the well-being of our citizens through education, health, economic development, and cultural revitalization.
Today, the Yankton Sioux Tribe continues to walk the Great Road, balancing tradition and progress, protecting our heritage, and building a strong, self-determined community grounded in Dakota identity and values.
