New Mexico Traffic Safety Center

The (NMTSC) at the University of New Mexico acts as the primary administrative and licensing hub for DUI/DWI education programs across the state. While the center itself manages the curriculum and instructor licensing, the actual “DUI classes” are held at various approved school locations throughout New Mexico.

The DWI Education Program

The standard program is the state-mandated 12-hour course for individuals convicted of driving while impaired.

  • Structure: The course is typically broken into three 4-hour sessions or two 6-hour sessions.

  • Curriculum: Topics include New Mexico laws, the physiological effects of alcohol and drugs, and the legal and personal consequences of impaired driving.

  • Requirements: Attendance at all hours is mandatory. Most schools require you to bring your court order or referral documents and a specific form of ID.

  • “None for the Road”: This is a separate, self-study DWI awareness class required for first-time New Mexico driver’s license applicants between ages 18-24, or those 25+ with a prior DWI conviction.

Location and Contact Info

The administrative headquarters for the NMTSC is located on the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque.
