Experienced Representation From a West Des Moines Criminal Law Attorney Who Has Worked Both Sides of a Trial
Attorney Peter Berger knows how the legal system works. For more than 37 years, he has been a trial lawyer, starting out as a law clerk for the Polk County attorney’s office, then as a prosecutor in 1977. Soon, Mr. Berger became the prosecutor on all sex crimes cases in Polk County, then he was assigned to the Major Offense Bureau, handling all types of other major violent crimes.
After entering into private practice in 1980, he was hired by Polk County as a special prosecutor on several major cases, including Iowa’s first televised murder case. This experience as a prosecutor helps him skillfully defend the rights of the accused and advocate for the rights of injured victims. From the Berger Law Firm, P.C., he serves clients in Des Moines and throughout Iowa, and in surrounding states as well.
A Reputable State and Federal Trial Attorney for Criminal Defense and Personal Injury Plaintiff Claims
As a former prosecutor, Mr. Berger has firsthand insight into how the other side operates in a criminal case. Armed with this knowledge, he works hard to construct a legal strategy that will withstand the prosecution’s tactics in all state criminal defense and federal criminal defense cases. From charges involving drugs, sex crimes, Internet pornography, DUI, domestic violence and other allegations, attorney Berger will vigorously protect your rights and help you obtain bond.
Mr. Berger also fights to pursue significant compensation for people who have suffered serious personal injury, from cases involving brain trauma or other head injury, to burns, disfigurement, broken bones, back, neck, amputations and other injuries. Whether you have been injured in a car, truck or motorcycle accident, or in a slip-and-fall accident, you can count on Mr. Berger to give you the attention you deserve and to fight for the compensation you need.
Attorney Berger also represents abused persons who have suffered personal trauma in church, school, coaching or therapy settings.
A Reputation Earned by Passionate Representation of Clients
Mr. Berger has successfully defended and prosecuted many murder and manslaughter cases. Most recently, the first-degree murder acquittal of Haley Bass in August 2013, and the dismissal of manslaughter charges in another case involving a drug delivery. Mr. Berger often consults as a criminal law expert as shown in this recent WHO TV video.
In personal injury lawsuits, Mr. Berger has achieved more than $10 million of settlements and jury verdicts, including a $4.8 million grain/railway case, and YMCA drowning. Many other cases involved head injury, and often serious traumatic injury from railroad, bus, car and motorcycle accidents.
In the area of civil rights, after Mr. Berger successfully defended Octavius Bonds and Erin Evans in a televised criminal trial, charged by police with crimes they didn’t commit, he filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on their behalf. The monetary civil settlement Mr. Berger reached for Mr. Bonds and Ms. Evans was the largest ever recorded in the area.
