Young Attorneys: Getting Hired or Starting A Law Firm

Pros and Cons of Working for Yourself or Others

For many new law school graduates, the choice can be tough whether looking for a job with an existing law firm or starting a law firm. The answer isn’t always easy. The decision usually hinges on whether or not they feel prepared for their own business. Some prefer to work with an established name in order to gain more experience before starting their own practice.

Starting a Law Firm?

Here are some questions to ask before making that decision:

  • Does it matter to me if I always work for someone else’s law firm?
  • Am I prepared to put in extra hours running other administrative, financial and marketing aspects of the business?
  • Do I know how to start a law firm, file for permits, choose a name and office location?
  • What are the specific reasons I have in choosing to either work for myself or someone else? Which ones are the most important to me?
  • What are my long-term goals, and how can my time and experience help me get to where I want to go?

Working for an established firm can take some effort while researching and interviewing. But, in the end it aligns you with a stable brand that is already marketed and is recognizable. Starting a law firm takes more legwork to get started, but you will be working for yourself and can arrange your schedule as you choose. This way, you will have more control over the outcome, success and values of the business.

This is not an easy choice for some people, and requires thought about future goals. But whether you decide to work for a law firm or start your own, we are ready to help you find clients for your practice.
